My Character-Building Experience of Being Black in China
When I first set foot in Shenzhen, the cautions rang loud, sketching a scene of stifling glances and uninvited snaps. I expected to become a showcase, a walking exhibit judged either with admiration or revulsion, and my gut twisted between excitement and unease. Did you ever feel the air itself buzzing with unspoken expectations? The city thrummed with electric neon, promising boundless prospects, yet I sensed an overwhelming sense of being a puzzle piece dropped into a mosaic of sameness. My skin hue glowed like a bright billboard proclaiming 'outsider' against a backdrop of uniform gray. As I wandered the labyrinthine streets, each encounter felt like a test, each glance a silent question: how would I be received? The experience was more than a novelty; it was a stark reminder that visibility does not always equal acceptance.
